Our reading assignments this week have been over the concept of "cooperation".
We have been exploring the idea of "Why is working together a good way to solve a problem?"
So today, we will be "working together" to learn about bats and create a bat mobile.

PART 1: "Deltona Is Going Batty"
1.) Log on to Wonders (ConnectEd)
2.) Read "Delatona Is Going Batty" (expository text) with your special adult(s)
3.) Discuss the 3 questions listed on your worksheet (on desk) and then write down your final answers and turn-in.
The questions are:
- What problem do the people of Deltona have?
- How did the city officials and people of Deltona use cooperation to solve their problem?
- How does the local government of Deltona make decisions?
2.) Read "Delatona Is Going Batty" (expository text) with your special adult(s)

PART 2: BAT RESEARCH
Your task-- research facts about bats.
1.) Explore the following websites to learn facts about bats:
- Log-in to DiscoveryEducation -- search bats (videos, reading passages, etc.)
- Fun Bat Facts for Kids - Interesting Information about Bats
- Bats 4 Kids
- Vampire Bat Facts and Pictures -- National Geographic Kids
- 13 Incredible Bat Facts: Animal Planet
- Bats | Basic Facts About Bats | Defenders of Wildlife
2.) On the strips of paper (see supply table), please NEATLY write 4 of your favorite facts about bats. (such as where they live, what they eat, characteristics, etc.)

PART 3: Create BAT MOBILE
1.) Wrap the toilet tissue tube with black construction paper and glue on.
2.) Fold top in one way and bottom of tube inward the opposite direction.

3.) Trace and cut out wings on black construction paper.
4.) Trace and cut out 4 small bats on black construction paper AND paste "written" facts strips from your research in the middle of each bat.

5) Fold wings paper like an accordion.
6) Cut horizontal slits (in the middle of tube BUT not all the way through) on both sides of the bat bodies to thread the folded up wings through.
7) Unfold the wings and curve forward the wings to make them nice and full looking. The tip of the top of each wing was folded back to give it a bit of a more batty shape.

8) Cut 4 peices of fishing line NO longer than 1 foot.
9) Use paper punch to create 2 holes on the bottom of each wing.
10) Using the fishing line, TIE the "fact bats" to the larger bats wings.
11) Turn-in mobile to Mrs. Thompson.
